Author Tom Phelan, a native of Mountmellick, recently returned home from Monaco, where he was the Ireland Fund of Monaco’s fall writer-in-residence at the Princess Grace Irish Library.

In 2001, the Ireland Fund of Monaco created a bursary for Irish writers and academics to pursue their writing and research projects in the friendly surroundings of the Princess Grace Irish Library. The fund offers two residencies each year, and Tom Phelan was selected for one of the 2012 spots.

Not only did the residency offer Phelan the opportunity to live on the Riviera and enjoy its fair climate for a month, but it allowed him the time and space to devote himself to writing his next book.

Phelan gave a talk at the PGI Library on “Forgotten Heroes: Ireland’s WWI Soldiers” and read from his widely praised novel The Canal Bridge, which was inspired by Tom’s memories of the old veterans he knew while growing up in Mountmellick.

He also met with local lycee students studying English to discuss writing and to talk a bit about Ireland.
