Busy time for Laois Surf Club
IT’S the busiest and best time of year for the Laois Surf Club, whose members make for the west coast at every opportunity to make the most of the favourable conditions.
“Traditionally, September and October are the best months for surfing in Ireland,” explains Laois Surf Club chairman, Steve Kidd. “It’s a really good time for our members to catch the waves and for beginners to give it a shot and see if they like it.”
This time of year brings two of the highlights of the season for the Laois surfers as they look forward to the Lahinch Longboard Contest, organised by the West Coast Surf Club, which takes place this weekend, September 15/16.
Next up then will be the annual inter-counties event in Rossnowlagh, Donegal over the weekend of October 13/14. Laois surfers have been heading to the Rossnowlagh event without fail since they were first founded in 2004.
“Being landlocked in Laois is a disadvantage but not a deterrent for those of us who enjoy and love surfing, it’s such good fun, healthy and you always feel great after a two-hour stint in the water,” said Steve.
The Laois Surf Club continues to encourage and invite newcomers to sample the surf and welcome beginners to these two weekends where equipment hire and introductory lessons can easily be arranged.
Both Lahinch and Rossnowlagh beaches are particularly safe, surf boards and suits can be hired and club members can facilitate lessons for first timers. For both weekends the club have arranged competitive accommodation by securing and pre-booking B&B/hostel rooms.
Club members also pool transport for convenience and continue to encourage beginners to give surfing a try with the Laois Surf Club making it easier, safer and offering experience and advice to those starting out.
Anyone interested in taking part in the forthcoming surf weekends should contact any member of the Laois Surf Club or contact them through their website or facebook page, Laois Surf Club.
