Caring for carers in Parish Centre

Portlaoise is set to host a special event for people who dedicate themselves to caring for others this week as part of the National Carers Week.

The 6th National Carers Week celebrates and recognise the contribution of Ireland’s family carers with over 150 events nationally, from June 18-24.

As par of the week a health fair for family carers will be held in the Parish Centre, Portlaoise on Monday, June 18 from 10am to 2pm. On the day carers will be able to get their own health monitored. Checks will include blood pressure, diabetes, lung capacity, cholesterol and hearing to name but a few.

The organisers say other useful information to safeguard carers’ health will also be available on the day. There is no cost for this event, which is being run by the Carers Association. For information about other events please contact the Carers Association Mullingar office.

The week is co-ordinated by Care Alliance Ireland in partnership with eight other leading Irish organisations who support family carers; The Alzheimer Society, The Carers Association, Caring for Carers Ireland, The Disability Federation of Ireland, Bri, MS Ireland, Headway, and The Irish Hospice Foundation.

The Carers Association Family Carers are usually immediate relatives, who provide very high levels of care, at home, for children and adults with severe disabilities, frail older people and people who are terminally ill.
