Charity fundraiser with a twist

Abbeyleix Vintage & Classic Club is hosting a charity event with a difference next Sunday, September 9.

For the past two years the club has organised an annual Vintage Rally to raise funds for charity. But this year - following the bad weather - they

decided to do something different.

Next Sunday they will hold a Poker Fun in aid of Abbeyleix Hospital. Participants in the Poker Run will receive a playing card at each of five designated stops and

on their return to base at the Manor Hotel in Abbeyleix the winning hand will receive a prize.

It all sounds like great fun and it is according to organiser Arthur Holohan. “The weather has been so bad this summer we knew that it would be very mucky if

we held a Vintage Rally like we did last year. We wanted an event that would appeal to as many people as possible so we could raise serious funds for Abbeyleix

Hospital which has been suffering due to cutbacks.”

The Poker Run will have two categories - a Car Run - which is open to all cars, not just vintage ones. Registration time is at 10.30am on Sunday in the car park

at the Manor Hotel. The participants will get their first playing card at the Manor Hotel, then it is on to further stops in Ballyroan, Ballinakill, Durrow,

Ballacolla and then back to Abbeyleix and a special Vintage Dinner is on offer at the Manor Hotel.

For tractors, High Nelly bicycles and all other forms of transport there is an alternative shorter route, again starting from the Manor Hotel and traveling via

Ballacolla, Durrow and back to the Manor Hotel.

“It is not about speed. There is no rush, the people taking part can take their time as there will be refreshments at some of the stops along the way,” explains Arthur.

“When all the participants return to the Manor Hotel we can see who has the best hand and the winner will receive a prize. There will also be the option of the

Vintage price dinner at the Manor Hotel who have been very good to us at sponsoring and supporting the event every year.”

It is anticipated that all the participants will have returned to the hotel by 2pm where they can relax after their fund raising efforts and watch the All Ireland hurling final if they wish.
