Toastmaster Meree OSullivan being congratulated by President, Mark Bastow on her success in competitions last year.

Joining Toastmasters was one of the best decisions Portlaoise resident and public speaker, Meree O’Sullivan says she ever made. The teacher said the hardest decision was to walk in the door of the public speaking club on her first day, but she said it has become difficult to imagi ne a more positive learning environment.

“In Toastmasters there is no judgment. Everyone is in the same boat, and we all support each other. It’s impossible to make a mistake. I suppose it really is a way to increase your self esteem and confidence in the gentlest way possible.

“All of the challenges in Toastmasters are optional. There are no “musts” and no “should”. It’s an education programme where we learn to communicate, not just in talking but in listening too. And in addition it’s so much fun!!

Meree has won several competitions since joining

“You improve your speaking, thinking and listening skills in a totally supportive environment,” she said.

Toastmasters is open to all ages Guests are welcome and the first two meetings are free. Meetings are held every second and fourth Monday of the month at 8pm in the Killeshin Hotel, Portlaoise.
