Labour party leader, Eamon Gilmore has said he is highly confident that the party would make big gains in the upcoming local elections in Laois.
"We have five candidates in the field; more than we have had in this county in forty years. We are contesting in four of the five electoral areas with candidates of high quality. Talking to them and their supporters I am told the response they are getting on the doorsteps is extraordinary.
"Indeed some of the older members tell me the positive response surpasses what they got in 1992 when Pat Gallagher won a seat for Labour in Laois Offaly at the height of the Spring Tide."
Mr Gilmore was in Portlaoise on Friday to address the IMPACTconference in the Heritage Hotel and to campaign with local candidates, Jim O'Brien of Portlaoise, Pat Bowe of Mountmellick and Ray Fitzpatrick of Borris in Ossory. He was accompanied by Labour European candidate, Nessa Childers.
