A THREE tonne weight limit has been put on Vicarstown Bridge.
Cllr Tom Mulhall said the bridge has been closed to heavy vehicles while Waterways Ireland assess the situation and compile a plan for repair.

"It is very important that heavy vehicles comply with this limit while it is in place, so as not to damage the bridge further. The last thing we want is an accident on the river," he added.

Cllr Mulhall said he would like to see the old bridge restored, and not replaced by a more modern bridge. "It's important that the work is carried out before the summer," the councillor said.

"The council are doing their best to promote tourism in Laois, and the canal and boats are very important to tourism in the county," he concluded.
