COMMUNITY endeavour, sporting prowess and artistic achievement all make up the 2009 Leinster Express/Laois Credit Unions/Portlaoise Heritage Hotel People of the Year awards, the winners of which are announced this week. Fifteen recipients from throughout Laois will receive their awards at a gala function in the Portlaoise Heritage Hotel on Saturday, February 20.
The evening, which will have RTE's Eileen Dunne once again as its MC, will pay tribute to the many and varied achievements of Laois people throughout 2009.
In the Community Awards section there is recognition for the Cuisle Centre, Portlaoise and the work it has undertaken in the provision of support and care to cancer patients and their families, throughout the county and beyond.
Celine Knight, Portarlington is honoured for her work in bringing the Teenline support line service to Portarlington. Aimed specifically at teenagers, Celine first became involved in the service in 2007, and Teenline's base in Portarlington is the first outside of Dublin.
John Hosey from Raheen receives his award for his community work. John is well known for his musical interests, ranging from local choirs and schools, to the annual Raheen panto. He is a member of the Laois Offaly Families for Autism (LOFFA), and he played a key role in the setting up of the 'Naomh Brid' autistic spectrum unit in Scoil Mhuire, Abbeyleix.
Michael Gowing from Portlaoise is honoured for his role as National President of Macra na Feirme. A former young farmer of the year, Michael has been a strong and articulate advocate for young farmers, and their contemporaries in the broader community. A major expansion of the association's membership base and activities is one of his key priorities.
CJ Sheeran Ltd, Mountrath receives an award in the Business Category. The Mountrath firm is one of Ireland's largest pallet and specialised timber packaging manufacturers, and has expanded into wood recycling and garden products. Employing 55 people, the company had a turnover of €7 million last year.
St Vincent's Hospital, Mountmellick is recognised for its sterling work in the community, and for its standard of patient care and attention.
Poet, writer and broadcaster, Pat Boran, Portlaoise receives the Arts award. in 2009 Pat published a memoir of his childhood in Portlaoise in the 1960s and 70s, titled 'The Invisible Prison: Scenes from an Irish Childhood.' His 'New and Selected Poems' was published in 2007.
Fr John Dunphy, PP Graiguecullen/Killeshin is honoured for his work at community level in his parish, which also encompasses Arles, Ballylinan and Killeen. In April last year, the Graiguecullen/Killeshin Parish Centre was officially opened by President Mary McAleese.
As always the People of the Year Awards acknowledge the strong sporting prowess of Laois. Hurling county champions, Clough/Ballacolla are honoured with Willie Hyland, a star Laois and Clough/Ballacolla forward.
Portlaoise's Paul Cahillane receives the Football award for his contribution to Portlaoise's Leinster title. This is Paul's second People of the Year award, having previoiusly won for soccer.
Meanwhile, Portlaoise manager, John Mulligan receives an award for his work, coaching the town team to a Leinster championship title.
