FOR the first time ever, an initiative known as ‘Careers in Music’ will be piloted in Laois. Careers in Music is a summer workshop run under the aegis of Portlaoise Comhaltas with the support of the Spink.

The pilot project which is funded by Laois Partnership Ltd will take place at Abbeyleix Heritage House and is open to suitable young musicians who may or may not be members of Comhaltas. Chairman of Spink CCE Paul Lynch said: “One of the main aims of the Careers in Music project is to broaden the capacity of musicians who are attending secondary school through exposure to the commercial and production side of the business as well as performance under the guidance of professional performers acknowledged by the industry as innovative and successful. We are also looking into the very strong possibility that the project will be accredited to FETAC level 5 for modules entitled Music Theory and Practice and Music Industry Studies, although this has yet to be confirmed”.

Careers in Music will cater for a group of approximately twenty five to thirty teenagers by developing composition and orchestration skills while at the same time exploring the roles of the various professional categories that make up the music industry. ‘It is about appreciating the various education and career options as well as learning to apply music theory”, said PJ Phelan, chairman of Portlaoise Comhaltas.

Delivery of the workshop will be over a six week period amounting to 18 days in total at Heritage House, Abbeyleix from 10am to 4pm. Teachers for the course include Colm Phelan of Goitse, Yvonne Bolton, and Áine McGeevey. Robert Harvey, a member of the band Cirrus will also provide some tuition. A minimum of two tutors will be in attendance at all times, supplemented by guest speakers, master tutors and field trips.

The project commences on Tuesday June 26 but because of the modular structure it may be possible to accept suitable candidates after that date. However places are limited. Anyone interested in joining can contact PJ Phelan or Paul Lynch by email to careersinmusic2012@gmail.com. The cost is €100.
