The autumn programme at Dunamaise Arts Centre Portlaoise is in full swing and coming up next is the award-winning Spanish film Hasta la Vista (Come As You Are) on Wednesday October 16 and hugely successful Tuesdays with Morrie on Saturday October 19.
Hasta la Vista (Come As You Are) was winner of Best Film and Audience Award, Montreal World Film Festival 2012 and Audience Award, Karlovy Vary, 2012. The potentially tired convention of twentysomething virgins embarking on a sexual odyssey of a road-trip is given a twist when Philip (a paraplegic), Lars (who has a debilitating terminal cancer) and Jozef (almost completely blind) decide on a road trip to a specialist brothel in Spain. The film never treats disability crassly but also avoids being overly reverential or over-sentimental.
The international best-selling novel by Mitch Albom, Tuesdays with Morrie, an accomplished journalist driven solely by his career, and his former college professor Morrie Schwartz is adapted for the stage and of the comes to Dunamaise following a successful national tour. Years after graduation, Mitch happens to catch Morrie’s TV appearance and learns that his old professor is battling Lou Gehrig’s Disease. See www.dunamaise.ie for more.
