TWO local art students are currently exhibiting their work in Abbeyleix Library. Rebecca Deegan is a 19 year old art student, living in Portlaoise. She completed an Art, Craft and Design PLC course in Abbeyleix FEC, where she met Donna Kearns, before going onto Ballyfermot College to study Fibre Art and Textile Design, she is now in second year of this course.

Donna Kearns is 20 years old, living in Errill. She has just completed two years of Art, Craft Design and Art and Business in Abbeyleix FEC. In September she is going on to study Fine Art in Limerick.

Rebecca says that a lot of her work is self portrait work, with most of her inspiration coming from her thoughts. “I use all of my fears, worries, dreams and thoughts as a basis for my art. I also find inspiration in strange or interesting landscapes or natural objects. I like to use lots of different media in my work ,from pencils and paint to textiles and photography”.

Donna says that her work is about her life, her thoughts and her ideas, stating that she is heavily influenced by Andre Breton and the Surrealist movement. “I am inspired by the mundane and the magnificent, my dreams, my nightmares, my fears, my humiliation, my elation and my fantasies”.

Most of Donna’s work deals with different stages and levels of mental ill health and features the effects of the stigmas attached to it. She says that with her art she hopes to abolish the stigmas of mental ill health. For more on this or any of the events happening in Abbeyleix Library, visit their page on www.laois.ie.
