The Laois patriot James Fintan Lalor School will be brought into the 21st century later at the premiere of a play about his life later this month at the Dunamaise Theatre.

From the Sod to the Sky by Mike Finn has the specially commissioned play by Laois County Council’s Arts Office to launch the first James Fintan Lalor School. The production stars Paul Meade as the patriot and Myles Dungan the RTÉ presenter who plays himself as a TV interviewer. Almost all the answers are taken from the patriot’s writings. Mike Finn believes the TV setting makes Lalor accessible.

“By the magic of theatre he is being brought into the present day from the past. The setting is a television studio and he is being interviewed by Myles Dungan who was the ideal person because he is also a historian,” he said.

There will also be some audience interaction.

Apart from opening the school, the play is staged on Culture Night, September 20.
