THIS Friday night, the cinema club at the Dunamaise Arts Centre will be presenting ‘The Woman in the Fifth’. Hot on The Big Picture’s heels comes another European adaptation of a Douglas Kennedy thriller.
Pitching up in Paris to be closer to his estranged ex-wife and daughter, novelist Tom (Ethan Hawke) finds his grip on reality slipping after he starts an affair with seductive translator Margit (Kristin Scott Thomas).
Margit, a mysterious and elegant widow who sets strange rules to their meetings: she will only see him at her apartment in the fifth arrondissement, at 5pm sharp, twice a week and he should ask no questions about her work or her past life. When people suddenly start dying around Tom, he begins to believe that a dark force has entered his life, punishing anyone who has recently done him wrong.
Aided by dreamlike lensing and a raft of enigmatic supporting characters, writer/director Pawel Pawlikowski (My Summer Of Love) seeks to channel the paranoid spirit of early Polanski. For more visit www.dunamaise.ie.
