THE Arts Office in Laois County Council have just announced another programme of summer arts workshops for children and young people throughout the county in July. The programme includes a rich mix of arts activities including art and craft, dance, creative writing, music and pottery in a number of areas around Laois.

The programme includes a rich mix of arts activities including art and craft, dance, creative writing, music and pottery in a number of areas around Laois.

In Durrow in the Boys NS from July 2 to July 6 and in Mountrath Kiln Lane Community Centre from July 9 to July 13 ceramic artist Edel O’Keeffe will show how to design and create simple ceramic pieces in a fun environment. The weeks will include drawing and designing a number of pieces which will then be made from clay.

In Emo NS from July 2 to July 6 workshops with artist Orla McDonagh will look in a fun way at portraits from classic Roman sculpture to modern art. Participants will be guided through the basic proportions and how to create a realistic pencil portrait followed by an experimental modern self portrait.

In the MDA Mountmellick from July 9 to July 13, artist Siobhan Keogh will explore and develop the creativity of the individual, to improve confidence and develop skills in, painting, drawing, cutting ,and collage, in a fun and enjoyable way. In The Dunamaise Arts Centre Portlaoise from July 9 to July 13 dance artist Erica Bahia will explore the basic elements of dance, space, energy, rhythm with young people while developing contemporary dance and Hip Hop dance techniques and skills.

In Portlaoise from July 16 to July 20 art workshops with Artist Conor Brennan will include various aspects of painting, drawing and some clay sculpture. The main aim is to allow the young people to enjoy themselves while learning new ways of exploring and making art.

Also in Portlaoise from July 16 to July 20 writing workshops with writer Jean O’Brien will help promote an enjoyment and understanding of creative writing. Using existing stories, poems and word games as well as the participants own writing to offer an enjoyable week of writing in a relaxed and encouraging atmosphere.

The Arts Office will facilitate arts workshops in July as part of Laois County Councils’ social inclusion policy. Art workshops in the MDA Mountmellick, in association with the Youth Development Centre will take place from July 9 to July 13. Pottery Workshop in Mountrath in association with Respond take place from July 9 to 13. There will also be Art Workshops in the Birchgrove Community Centre in association with Laois Partnership from July 16 to July 20.

Music Generation Laois will also kick-off activity this July with three Summer Camps in Portlaoise. A School of Rock and Pop, The Music Box – a programme for children and young people with special needs and a Stampede Drumming Camp will offer week long workshops with highly experienced music practitioners, marking the beginning of Music Generation Laois’ fantastic programme of music education for the county.
