It may have been Eurovision Final night across Europe on Saturday night last, but in the Castle Arms Hotel in Durrow all eyes were on the 15 finalists vying for the title of Young Voice of Laois 2014.

It may have been Eurovision Final night across Europe on Saturday night last, but in the Castle Arms Hotel in Durrow all eyes were on the 15 finalists vying for the title of Young Voice of Laois 2014.

This singing competition run by Durrow Development Forum in conjunction with the Laois School of Music encourages the young talented singers of the county. Following auditions in recent weeks in both Portlaoise and Durrow, fifteen auditionees were selected to participate in the final which was judged by Helena Begley and Geraldine Ryan.

Over 200 supporters came to the final which saw Sarah Luttrell from Ballybrittas take the coveted title with a spectacular rendition of The Beatles 1969 Hit ‘Oh Darling’. Sarah was awarded the Ronan Lawlor Memorial Cup, a Voice Training Scholarship from the Laois School of Music, participation in the School of Rock and Pop Summer Camp with Music Generation Laois and the opportunity to perform at both the ‘Durrow Scarecrow Festival’ and the ‘Laois School of Music Concert’.

Other winners on the night were Stacy Dunne from Durrow and Voitech Dzudza from Portlaoise.

Highly Commended were Eilish Carey Abbeyleix; Aaron Phelan, Abbeyleix and Fiona Kelly, Portlaoise.
