TOMORROW evening May24 sees an exciting launch of an exhibition that will marry the use of vacant retail space with a very active local camera club. This exhibition will highlight the talents of Portlaoise photography enthusiasts as well as illustrating how vacant spaces are being transformed in the growing ‘pop up’ scene in the country.

Portlaoise Camera Club will be the first group to take up residency in units 6 and 7 of Laois Shopping Centre (formerly The Jeanscene) for what is being described by facilitator David Delaney as “a unique event in a series of planned events” in what he has christened The:Space.

“People say they don’t know much about the arts, but we experience the arts every day and all around us- sometimes we don’t even realise it. The aim of The:Space is to showcase local groups, painters, poets, writers and musicians etc in a setting that we may not normally associate them with. The aim of The:Space is to encourage everyone, from all walks of life, to use and experience something they may not have before and to enjoy absorb and to question what they see hear and read and what it means to them”, said David.

Portlaoise Camera Club were born in February 2011 when a group of enthusiastic photographers came together to form what has become vibrant and very active society. The club and its members have achieved many benchmarks in their first year from building up a very active social networking page, running workshops, organising field trips to hosting their first exhibition and even having two winners in national individual photography competitions.

Ciara Drennan, Chairperson of Portlaoise Camera Club said, “when we were approached by David to not only take part in The:Space, but to be the first local group of people to use The:Space we were very excited. Portlaoise Camera Club have been involved in community projects since its inception in 2011, and are always honoured to be able to give something back to the community. We view The:Space as an excellent means for Portlaoise people to get involved in the growing Arts scene in Laois.

Ciara also said that the club has gone from strength to strength since they began. “We started out with a handful of people meeting in a hotel room to now having 50 members on our books. We see The:Space as an ideal forum for showcasing our members photographic talent, and as the perfect way for our newer members to take part in their first exhibition. In keeping with the community spirit of The:Space all our printing and mounting of images will be done locally in Portlaoise, and details of the services we use will be available throughout the run of the exhibition”.

Ciara said that the group are really looking forward to sharing their images in the exhibition and meeting new people. Members of Portlaoise Camera Club will be on hand throughout the run of the exhibition to have a chat about all things photography and club related.
