DANCE lovers will be able to travel to Birr this week as the arts centre immerses itself in all things dance. Today, Tuesday November 20, sees the Birr Film Club present Seven Solos: A Documentary, while next weekend sees IF ONLY (International Festival of a Necessarily Lonely You) take place in the centre.
Have you ever wondered what goes on in a dancer’s mind as they learn different choreographies? This documentary follows the process of dancer Li Chiao-Ping as she prepares to perform the work of seven postmodern choreographers including Elizabeth Streb, Heidi Latsky, June Watanabe, Victoria Marks, Cynthia Adams, Molissa Fenley and Bebe Miller. As Li immerses herself in the choreographic language of each choreographer and learns the solos created specifically for her, the camera captures and witnesses the passage of embodied knowledge and the hand-to-hand transfer of the creative impulse.
Other highlights include Mamuska Night on Saturday November 24 - a social event, a time to experiment, a chance to be inspired, an artistic risk and of course a fun night out. In a café-style setting the audience will be able to relax, drink a glass of wine, chat, listen to live music and watch a rich program of short live performances of various styles and genres. There is no charge for this.
On Sunday afternoon November 25, after more dance classes and workshops, the main program of the festival takes the stage with high caliber artists like Dylan Quinn (Northern Ireland), Asli Bostanci (Turkey), and Ferenc Feher (Hungary) amongst other. Tickets for this are priced at €15. For more information or to book tickets, contact Birr Theatre and Arts Centre at 057 91 22911 or visit www.birrtheatre.com.
