SHOPPERS at Laois Shopping Centre were wowed last Saturday, May 12 when Laois Youth Theatre presented a flashmob around the fountain.
Laois Youth Theatre were joined by their friends from Clare Youth Theatre on the day which kicked off with a workshop that morning to learn all the steps. The choreography was created by Portlaoise and Rathdowney youth theatre co-ordinator Áine Caulfield, with the help of Laois Youth Theatre members and staff.
The flashmob began with six teenagers carrying a sofa in through the front entrance of Laois Shopping Centre with shouts of ‘Pivot!’ and ‘Ross, this is heavy!’ to draw in the attention of the shoppers. Then they posed for photos on the couch in front of the fountain. When the familiar opening notes of ‘I’ll be there for you’ by The Rembrandts sounded, the six hopped up and began to dance.
Within seconds around 20 other teenagers from nearby shops joined the dance and soon after there were about 60 youth theatre members shimmying to the music. The dance included various moves including the ‘Superman’, the ‘tango’, the ‘airplane’ and the groups favourite, aptly named the ‘David Schwimmer’.
During the bridge of the song the dancing became freestyle, with air guitars, headbanging, and even some break dancing. In the final moments everyone posed around the fountain and held up signs and a banner reading ‘Make New friends, join Laois Youth Theatre’. As the cheers and applause rang out, the group dispersed, returning to their shopping, and drinking their coffees.
Laois Youth Theatre would like to thank all those involved in the flashmob including Kevin Doyle, centre manager; and the security staff at Laois Shopping Centre for their help and support.
