Mullany’s Pharmacy has reached the milestone of 60 years in business and to mark the momentous occasion they are holding a fun day on July 16 where they hope to see all their friends and customers.
In 1956 a young pharmacist Paddy Mullany moved to Portarlington and opened a pharmacy in the square at a premises previously owned by a Mr. Gilpin who operated a drapery business there for many years.
Sixty years later the business is still going strong but sadly Mr. Mullany died on 3rd April 2014, he will always be remembered by his staff for his kindness and understanding shown to them and by his loyal customers who could always count on him for his expert advice, and the time he would spend dealing with their queries.
His wife Breda worked alongside him all of those years and is still involved in the business along with their sons Timothy, also a pharmacist and Conor.
The shop has undergone many changes over the years, the latest being a major revamp in 2005, when the shop doubled its’ original size and now has a bright spacious interior to cater for the growing population of Portarlington and surrounding areas.
The building also has its’ own bit of history attached to it. When the movie ‘Into the West’ was being filmed in Portarlington, the side entrance to the shop was used with the name over the shop changed to the ‘Border Grill’.
