A dozen Laois long term unemployed recently graduated from a training course of a type that has resulted in half of participants getting a job from it.

The MOMENTUM Awards Ceremony took place in Treo Nua, Portlaoise, on Wednesday August 31, where the students were presented with two QQI Level 5 certificates, in Customer Service and Sales and Communications.

Local businesses who took part in the six month course, which included up to 14 weeks of professional work placement, were Internal Results, 3 Mobile, Square Dealz and Super Valu.

It was one of three such courses run in the midlands this year, by Optimum Limited, who say they focus on the best ways of ensuring jobs are gained, not just qualifications.

“We liaise with the participant and company for the duration of the work placement; and beyond, to ensure a smooth transition into employment.

We also have a business development team sourcingopportunities for our participants,” said Pamela Toner, Programme Manager.

Optimum partnered with the local businesses in Portlaoise to create employment opportunities for the long term unemployed.

Each company that provides employment following the thirteen week work placement can avail of the Jobs Plus scheme, which offers a €7,500 - €10,000 subsidy towards salary costs over a 2 year period.

“Fifty per cent plus of participants who completed Optimum Ltd.’s MOMENTUM Programme secured Employment.

Well done and thank you to all of our participants and of course to all the employers. Success is a choice,” said Ms Toner.’
