€42 million grants paid to Laois farmers

More than €42 million was paid to farmers in Laois last year under two European Union backed schemes.

Figures published in the Dáil by the Minster for Agriculture Simon Coveney reveal that €39.4 m was paid out under the Single Payment Scheme. Of the 2,900 farmers who applied in Laois some 2,871 farmers received tmoney. On average , more than €13,000 was paid out of the scheme which is processed by the Department of Agriculture in Portlaoise.

The scheme is part of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and is the EU’s main agricultural subsidy scheme.

Nearly €3 m was paid out to Laois farmers under the Disadvantaged Areas Scheme. Of the 1,753 in Laois who applied some 1,542 had received the grants by December.

Nationally, by year-end, payments under Single Payment Scheme will exceed €1.2 billion, while €200 million will have been paid under the Disadvantaged Areas Scheme.
