The public is being urged to help Portlaoise’s traders this week to ensure that the town’s streets have a festive atmosphere again this year.
Downtown Portlaoise are a small group of businesses who take on the major task of paying for and organising the Christmas lights.
In total the lights cost €14,700. This includes electricity. Downtown Portlaoise has to pay for meters all year round and the electricity used at Christmas.
An electrician must also be paid to help put up and take down the lights, as well as the fitting of new installations. Insurance cover is needed in case anything goes wrong. Bulbs and installations must also be replaced as they break. The overall cost does not include the purchase of new light fittings.
This is a major undertaking for businesses in Portlaoise who are busy trying to keep their businesses afloat.
“We would like to appeal to the people of Portlaoise to give what they can towards the lights, as they benefit everybody in the community,” said the group.
The flag day is Friday, October 18 so please give what you can.
