Thirty years of Green Belt

Founded in 1982 by Mossie Ryan and the late Tim O’Brien, Green Belt has been one of the pioneers of Irish private forestry over the past 30 years. The establishment of the company was a brave step, considering private planting was very much in its infancy.

One of the main developments was the decision by Green Belt to offer a four year fixed cost forest establishment and maintenance contract. Previous to this contract, the land owner used to carry all of the financial risk in planting their land. This four year contract remains a prime selling feature of the Green Belt forestry package.

In the 1980’s it was the Western Package, grant aiding forestry along the western seaboard that ignited interest. Not until the 1990’s under the CAP forestry scheme with 100% grant aid and a 20 year premium, did the real explosion in private forestry planting occur. Now forestry is coming full circle. Earlier planted sites need roading and thinning. Indeed some earlier sites have been clearfelled. Many landowners are pleasantly surprised by the income from thinning and clearfelling. With this extra work Green Belt have taken on two engineers to process road applications and any planning issues that arise.
