The weather presents the biggest challenge to traffic management of the National Ploughing Championships, according to Portlaoise Gardai.

Speaking to the Leinster Express at the launch in Killenard, Garda Inspector Martin Harrington said that the management of traffic would be similar to the Electric Picnic but he said the ploughing would a bigger event with the will be daily arrival and departure of traffic over the three days.

While this would be a challenge he said the good road infrastructure and the experience local gardaí in dealing with the Picnic and the holding of the ploughing event in Athy made police “confident” of being able to manage the event.

However, Insp Harrington said the “big challenge” would be the weather with dry conditions making all the difference. Wet weather would have an impact on car parks and could slow traffic he said.

Mr Peter Carey of Laois County Council said hosting the event would involved a huge logisitical effort but planning had already started.

“We already have had a number of meetings. We’ve had the various agencies together, the HSE, the gardai, fire service and our own engineering staff to look at the various requirement from water, waste, road acess.
