House building drops in Laois

Talk of a bounce in the housing market do not seem to be reflected in reality according to the latest figures from builders and construction sector researchers.

new statistics released by the Construction Industry Federation (CIF) show that 23 new housing units were commenced in the first four months of 2012 in Laois. This represents a decrease of 11 units or 32 per cent on the same period during 2011, when work began on 34 new units, according to the CIF’s latest Housing Statistics Bulletin.

Of the new units commenced all 23 were single units, representing 100 per cent of the total activity.

For the twelve month period up to the end of April of this year, 87 housing units were commenced in Laois. This compares with 109 commenced in the twelve months up to April 2011, a year on year decrease of 22 units or 20 per cent.

There was an increase in the level of house completions in Laois during the first five months of 2012. Between January and May of this year 114 housing units were completed. This compares with 85 during the same period in 2011, an increase of 29 units or 34 per cent.

Nationally the level of new house completions is down for the first five months with 3,283 housing units completed compared to 4,442 during the January to May period for 2011 – a drop of 1,160 units or 26%.

Meanwhile there has also been a slow down in the plans to build houses. The new National Housing Construction Index complied has shown the continued drop in construction activity in Laois, measuring submitted Planning Applications and Planning Commencements. .

Researchers at www.link2plans.com found that that from January to June 2012, 116 planning applications were submitted in Laois. This compared to 130 in 2011 resulting in a drop of 11 per cent. Laois saw a 28 per cent decrease in the number of commencement notices, one of the largest falls across the country with notices down from 65 to 47.
