Mountmellick must learn from Portlaoise

Help to rejuvenate Mountmellick town centre.

That was Cathaoirleach Rosemary Whelan’s plea at the Town Council monthly meeting last week.

It was up to members to try to do this before the Council was abolished, she stressed.

Cllr Marc Connolly, agreeing, recalled that during the boom years a developer had wanted to put a shopping centre in mid-town Mountmellick. Unfortunately, this had not happened.

He urged: “We should be looking at towns like Roscrea and Birr which still have viable town centres.”

By contrast, he said, the old part of Portlaoise was doing very little business.

He added: “I hope the Co Council can learn from their mistakes.”
