This year is set a historic one for Shaws Department Store as it marks 150 years of business at the heart of the Laois community.

The Shaw Group, a family owned Irish business founded in 1864, has grown from a small drapery store in Mountmellick, to a national chain of department stores.

Today, it comprises of 17 department stores in 16 locations, employing over 600 people.

But the company continues to be owned and controlled by the midlands-based Shaw family. The 4th generation of the family now run the business, which has its head office in Portlaoise and its central warehouse function in Carlow. Shaw’s original and first store in Mountmellick, remains trading to this day.

Speaking about the 150th anniversary, Jonathan Shaw, Managing Director of Shaws Department Stores said

“The challenge for us now in what is an ever more competitive retail environment, is to maintain and build on our company’s success over the last 150 years.
