Mountmellick man Eoghan O’Neill is cool, calm and collected in the run-up to the 7th annual Macra na Feirme Mr Personality Festival.

The Mountemellick Macra Club member, who was chosen to represent Laois at a selection night in Camross last February, is now hoping to scoop the national title in Kilkennny at the end of April.

AGED 23, Eoghan is cabinet maker but out of work at the moment. His hobbies include archery, gaelic football and of course Macra.

“I might have a party piece, I haven’t figured that out yet. I hope to represent Laois well, have a good weekend and get to know more people,” Eoghan told the Leinster Express.

There are no Rose of Tralee type preparations going on for Eoghan who joined the large Mountmellick club a year and a half ago and is now secretary. He does have his escort lined up, his lovely girlfriend Breda Greany, along with the support of his family and Mountmellick members.

The contest, sponsored by Kilkenny, Carlow and District Farm Relief Services, takes place next weekend, April 27 and 28 at the Springhill Court Hotel in Kilkenny. 27 finalists will undergo two grillings by a panel of judges, as well as set challenges on Saturday morning.

“I haven’t a clue what the challenges will be, but in the past they have had archery and sumo wrestling. It’ll be a bit of craic,” says Eoghan.

He says Mountmellick Macra is as busy as every.

“We have 65 affiliated members, and enter most of the competitions, this year alone we got to the semi-finals in drama and question time, and had a successful panto run,” he said.

Mr Personality 2012 will be announced at midnight on Saturday after an informal banquet and live music. Tickets for the banquet can be booked by contacting Denis on 086 8389401.
