PORTLAOISE Musical Society scooped a prestigious second place prize at last weekend’s Association of Irish Musical Societies awards in Killarney.

The cast and crew of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ came runners up in the best overall show category, pipped by Tralee Musical Society for first place. Portlaoise Musical Society were also nominated for best technical and best female singer. The dedication shown by the production team of choreographer Grace McGrath and musical director Sarah Lynch Barrett together with director Peter Kennedy not to mention the hard work and dedication of the wonderful cast, crew and committee has resulted in this fabulous honour being bestowed on the community musical society.

To put a show of this calibre together takes a lot of dedication and hard work by all members to gather the funds and the committee would like to thank all their sponsors and patrons. The society also worked hard throughout the year with various fundraising events such as the golf classic, Battle of the Bands (to be repeated this year), and the movie and music table quiz, to mention just a few.

This summer the golf classic will be held on July 22 in the Heath Golf Club at a cost of 160euro per team of 4, or 40euro per person. Anyone interested in putting in a team of any number should contact Damien Halpin on 085 1655496. This year’s Portlaoise Musical Society offering will be The Wiz, and auditon pieces will be available from Sharon O’Reilly Dunphy at Café Latte. Auditions will take place on July 18 in St Paul’s National School, Borris Road, Portlaoise, from 7pm.
