CYCLING enthusiasts should mark Sunday March 25 in their diary as the inaugural Lap of Laois will be taking place. The event is being organised by Watchtours Cycling Club with all proceeds going to The Make Believers, a Durrow based charity that works with children who are coping with terminal and long term illness.

Watchtours cycling club was formed in 2010 by prison officers from the Midlands Prison and last year raised over €5,000 for The Make Believers by organising a sponsored cycle from Portlaoise to Waterford. This year will see the event taking place entirely within Co Laois with two routes to choose from, a challenging 100km which includes the tough climb over The Cut from Clonaslee, and a shorter 60km over a flatter course. A good level of fitness and some cycling experience would be needed by anyone taking part.

The start time is 9.30am from Portlaoise GAA Club grounds and the entry fee is €25. Check out www.facebook.com/lapoflaois for more details.
