Portlaoise Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Eireann finished up for the summer last Monday, May 28, with a music filled wrap party at Kavanagh’s Bar in Portlaoise.
Both teachers and students of every level demonstrated their Irish music skills throughout the night, to great enjoyment of all. Uileann pipes, purchased by Portlaoise Comhaltas with a grant from Laois Partnership, were also brought into great use on the night.
PJ Phelan from Portlaoise CCE thanked Laois Partnership for helping them buy instruments.
“One of the main objectives of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Eireann is to teach students how to play musical instruments that are part of our Irish heritage. Part of that restoration involves learning to play uileann pipes and harps. This has now been made possible in Laois thanks to Laois Partnership,” he said.
Mr Phelan also thanked all the voluntary committee members of Portlaoise Comhaltas, who he said complete trojan work to ensure Irish traditional heritage is maximised throughout the Laois area.
The new instruments along with accordion, concertina, tin whistle, guitar, Irish language lessons and much more are taught at the Portlaoise Comhaltas branch in the Gaelscoil, Portlaoise on Monday nights.
The new term will start next September. Anyone interested in joining can contact PJ Phelan at 087-2345010.
