It’s just what the doctor ordered--the 12th annual New Year’s Day sponsored walk in Timahoe for the Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA).
And, to make matters even better, the doctor will be in attendance--Dr Eva Orsmond of television’s Operation Transformation fame.
She’ll launch the walk at 1pm on the village green--and, no doubt, she’ll dispense advice on health, diet and fitness. She may even have a few appropriate recipes.
One man who has benefited from Dr Eva’s expertise is Timahoe resident Johnny Dalton. Aptly, he is the organizer of the sponsored walk, or walks. There are two routes, six kms and 10kms, both through the scenic Fossey hills.
“You can walk whatever you are comfortable with,” Johnny explains.
“It’s a great way to start the New Year, especially in these days when there’s a lot of talk about obesity in young people.”
Last year, newly fit and trim, he completed the six kms route--and he is planning to do the same this time.
Following the walks, participants can avail of tea, soup and sandwiches in Timahoe Community Hall, where, too, they can meet Dr Eva.
Johnny says all proceeds from the even will to the IWA Slieve Bloom Centre in Portlaoise. Managed by Carmel O’Connor, it looks after clients from all over Laois.
Sponsorship cards are available from Johnny and the Centre. Don’t worry if you haven’t got a card. You can turn up on the day and make a contribution. See you in Timahoe.
