Almost a year since the mysterious disappearance of Marie Kimartin from her Portlaoise home, her killer remains at large.

The Ballinasloe woman vanished after leaving her Beladd home on the afternoon of December 16. She went out after receiving a phone call from a male caller who rang her ex-directory number from the public kiosk at Dublin Road, Portlaoise.

Ms Kilmartin had just returned from working at a senior citizens’ party in the Portlaoise Area Social Services at New Road.

Six months after her disappearance, the badly decomposed body of the 35-year-old woman was found in a drain in a lonely bog road known locally as Pim’s Lane at Borness, Mountmellick, on the Laois/Offaly border.

At a press conference in Portlaoise Garda Station in June, gardai expressed the belief that the isolated drain where her body was found was consistent with local knowledge.

They also maintained that the quiet and vulnerable victim must have known her assailant. This week, gardaí said that anybody with any information had a moral obligation to tell the gardaí.
