slieve Bloom mountain walkers now have a new array of maps to study, making them easier than ever to explore.
The set of 15 maps, part funded by Fáilte Ireland, were launched recently in Kinnitty Castle as the Slieve Bloom Walking Festival got underway.
The popular festival, now in its 18th year, was attended by more than 350 hill walkers from all around Ireland, who enjoyed both evening entertainment and expert guided walks over the May bank holiday weekend.
“The weather behaved for the most part, and it was an ideal opportunity to showcase the wonderful amenities of the Slieve Blooms and their environs,” said Ann Lanigan, Rural Recreation Officer with Laois Partnership.
The peel away maps were produced with the help of the Slieve Bloom Rural Development Association.
They feature driving directions on one side, and routes for walks of various lengths on the other.
They can be picked up at local hotels and tourist offices, and can be downloaded from www.slievebloom.ie. Shannon Development have also produced a new map for the region.
Ms Lanigan says the maps are an invaluable source for any walker.
“Due to the co-operation of all landowners in the Walks Scheme, the Slieve Bloom way is safe, well maintained and well marked, and the routes are inspected annually,” she said.
