Mountrath hurlers see off the Dubs

On Friday, October 25, Mountrath Community School U16 hurlers booked their place in the U16 A Fr Cosgrave Cup Shield Final with a hard fought but deserving win over Colaiste Eoin of Dublin in Hawkfield GAA Ground in Newbridge.

On a nice day for hurling, the team from Dublin began brightly with a number of well taken scores from distance. Mountrath steadily got into the game with points from Jake Cranny, Dylan Lalor and an Aaron Dunphy free settling them.

The Mountrath side then began hurling with more pace and fluidity and a brace of goals from two Aaron Dunphy frees gave the Laois men a strong foothold in the game.

Jake Cranny was pro a constant threat at full forward and when he was fouled twice in quick succession, it gave Aaron Dunphy the opportunity to ensure Mountrath led at the break 2-6 to 1-5.

The second half was full of intensity with neither side willing to give up any ball without a fight.

The teams traded points before Colaiste Eoin scored a well worked goal to leave the minimum between the sides in favour of Mountrath.

This seemed to be the spur that MCS required and when Jake Cranny got on the break of a long delivery, he gave the Colaiste Eoin goalkeeper no chance, rifling to the back of the net.

With momentum now on their side, Aaron Dunphy pointed 3 further frees to put some daylight between the teams.

Try as they might the Dublin side could not breach a determined MCS rearguard and they had to make do with two consolation points to leave the final score MCS 3-9, Colaiste Eoin 2-8. David Connolly was very safe in the goals for Mountrath with DJ Kelly, Shaun Moore and Conor Phelan leading the way in defence.

Ben Quinlan worked himself into the game in the middle of the field while Aaron Dunphy, Shane Phelan and the outstanding Jake Cranny were constant menaces in attack.
