Sarsfields seniors continued their good form of the previous weekend when they defeated Dublin’s Foxrock-Cabinteely in the final of the inaugural Leinster Ladies Football 7-a-side Tournament in Carlow on Saturday.

The Laois champions opened poorly and lost to Foxrock-Cabinteely in the first round by 4-7 to 6-6. They settled down to business after that initial setback and disposed of Killoe from Longford by 4-9 to 1-7 in round two. An easy victory over Castlemitchel, by 4-14 to 0-2, and another over Dublin side Clanna Gael-Fontenoys on a score line of 9-7 to 3-4 set up a final spot against Foxrock.

The decider against the South siders was a thriller from start to finish. Sarsfields controlled the opening half, held a four point advantage at the break, and built up a comfortable 2-10 to 2-2 lead a few minutes into the second half but then sat back and allowed Foxrock to claw back three goals in quick succession. The Dubliners went ahead with seconds left to play but a brilliant counter attack ended with Grace Weston slotting home the winning goal a minute into injury time.

The Annual All-Ireland Ladies Football 7-a-side Finals will be held in Portmarnock and Malahide on Saturday next September 24. This is huge week-end for Ladies Football starting with the 7’s on Saturday when teams from all over the country compete in all grades, Junior, Intermediate and Senior.
