Portlaoise marched into the semi-finals of the U-21 hurling championship following a rather one-sided affair in Rosenallis on Saturday afternoon, which saw Portlaoise record six goals on their way to a sixteen point victory.
Eleven points ahead by the break, Portlaoise kept up the pressure in the second-half and only a late scoring burst put resepctability on the scoreline for Clonaslee.
Portlaoise went on a twelve minute rampage that saw them rack up a staggering 3-4. Colm Gleeson bagged a brace of goals with David Holland claiming the third, while Sean Culleton (3) and Daniel Delaney picked up points to complete the rout.
Clonaslee, St Manman’s replied with a free from midfielder, Will Young, but Portlaoise went back on the attack and notched another three points through David Holland, Cian Taylor and Ciaran McEvoy.
Clonaslee got a lifeline thanks to Will Young’s twenty-one metre bullet that rattled the Portlaoise net on the stroke of half time to see the deficit cut to eleven points at the interval.
It took Portlaoise just five minutes to claim their fourth goal with Cian Taylor applying the finish. Portlaoise continued with 2-2 in the fifteen minutes that followed thanks to goals from Daniel Delaney and substitute Jo Jo Thompson, while Sean Culleton and Philip O’Connell raised the white flag for The Town.
Clonaslee hit back with 1-2 in the closing minutes. Will Young bagged 1-1 to bring his tally to 2-3 for the day, while Ciaran Hyland claimed his second point as Portlaoise ran out comfortable victors on the day.
