Cahillane brace key as Portlaoise get off to winning start

Portlaoise got their 2012 campaign off to an impressive start with a routine victory over O’Dempseys in Portlaoise on Saturday evening. Apart from the inter-county players this was Portlaoise’s first run out on a football field since their Leinster Club defeat to St Brigids last year, but they showed no signs of rustiness in disposing of an O’Dempseys side that never stopped working but simply had no answer for the steady wave of attacking football conjured up by the powerful county champions.

The star men on the night were two of the several Laois players in the Portlaoise fifteen. Paul Cahillane racked up a very healthy personal tally of 2-3 for himself while county colleague Kieran Lillis ran the show from the back with a commanding display, and he posed plenty of problems for O’Dempseys at the other end of the field too, notching two fine points from play in a performance that typified Portlaoise’s dominance.
