Late scores edge Culohill past Paddock

Two late points from the outstanding Eoghan Doheny were crucial as Culohill edged past Paddock in a thrilling Division 3 Boys Final in O’Moore Park on Friday.

Two late points from the outstanding Eoghan Doheny were crucial as Culohill edged past Paddock in a thrilling Division 3 Boys Final in O’Moore Park on Friday.

This was one of the best games over the two days of Cumann na mBunscol Finals with two very talented teams giving their all and the result in doubt right up to the final whistle.

Culohill were three points in front at half-time but led by the impressive Ciaran Conroy, Paddock hit back and opened up a four point advantage midway through the second-half. Culohill however were not to be denied and a goal from Conor Delaney and three points from Doheny saw them claw their way back to take the title.

Paddock were quickly off the mark at the start with points from Evan Power and Taidhg Cuddy while Conroy was also denied a goal by a great save from Lorcan Fitzpatrick.

Playing with the wind, man of the match Eoghan Doheny fired Culohill back into the game with a quick-fire 1-2 from placed balls.

His opposite number Ciaran Conroy almost scored the most spectacular point of the day when he cut a sideline from all of 40 metres into the wind just wide of the post but he was on target soon after with a point from a free. Culohill extended their lead before the break with points from Padraic Dunne and Rory Deegan before Taidhg Cuddy pulled one back for Paddock to leave his side trailing 1-4 to 0-4 after a frantic first-half.

A goal apiece after the restart from Eoghan Doheny and Ciaran Conroy left the gap at three before Paddock blasted into the lead with 1-1 from Conroy and a goal from Cuddy.

That put them in pole position entering the final ten minutes but Culohill were not finished yet and led by Eoghan Doheny, they clawed their way back into the game. After a stunning save from Enda Breen in the Paddock goal, Doheny lofted over a free and Conor Delaney followed up with a goal to level the scores.

Rory Deegan and Ciaran Conroy exchanged points to leave the scores level entering the final two minutes when up stepped Eoghan Doheny to show great composure and maturity as he launched over two frees into the wind to win the game for his side.
