Arles-Kilcruise

Strong defensively this year, but their attack let them down. They ranked 10th in terms of scoring, which was never going to be good enough coming up against Portlaoise. Interestingly, they scored 1-11 in each of their first three games, and that then dropped to 1-9 in the semi-final.

Arles-Killeen

A very impressive year so far from Arles-Killeen, who are appearing at the top of all the right charts. Second top scorers, on average, at 18.5ppg, and they also have the best defence, allowing just 11.75ppg. Along with Graiguecullen, they are joint top of the goal scoring charts, with nine. They are conceding a lot from frees, however.

Ballylinan

Keeping their heads above water really at the moment, with the win over Emo keeping them in the SFC for another year. They are ranked well down both in terms of scoring and defending, and were very reliant on frees, with almost half their scores coming from placed balls.

Crettyard

They have never been the most exciting team in the championship, but if they continue to produce numbers like this year they might not be around for much longer. They scored a total of 4-19 points in three games, a meagre tally which left them with the second worse attack in the SFC.

Emo

Dodged relegation with a win over Timahoe in the playoff, and depending on what way you look at it, they were either lucky or unlucky this year. Lost their first two games by two and three points respectively, before then coming out on the right side of the highest scoring game in this year’s championship. Need to tighten up at the back, where they conceded an average of 15ppg.

Graiguecullen

The entertainters of the SFC. Games involved Graiguecullen produced a massive 17-79, a stunning figure considering they only took to the field four times. Their problems were at the back, where they are conceding far too many scores from play, while they are also heavily reliant on scores from frees. Tightening up at the back is the more pressing matter to rectify, however.

Killeshin

Another side who have been entertaining to watch this year, but they conceded almost as much as they scored and that has been their Achilles Heel. Six goals conceded in four games is not a great record, and one they have to improve on for 2014.

Mountmellick

Decidedly average from Mountmellick, who had the seventh best defence in the championship, but came in at 12 in terms of attack. They never kept a clean sheet in the championship, as they gave up six goals in four games.

O’Dempsey’s

Had O’Dempsey’s met anyone other than Portlaoise in the quarter-finals, they would more than likely have made it to the semi-finals. They managed the highest average score in the championship over their three games, and their defence did pretty well too, as they gave away only 0-17 points in their first two games.

Portarlington

Their runaway victory over The Rock papers over some very big cracks. They scored just 0-19 in their first two games, and only scored 0-4 from frees in the entire championship. They weren’t nearly dangerous enough in attack, and their win over a lacklustre Rock side signficantly improved their averages.

Portlaoise

There has been a steady progression from the reigning champions as the championship has gone on, and since their defeat to Graiguecullen they have averaged 19ppg. Normally goals are their speciality, but they are scoring a lot of points at present, and have scored more of those than anyone else in the championship.

St Joseph’s

Not much to get excited about for St Joseph’s supporters, particularly in attack, where they averaged 13.6ppg and saw over 40% of their scores come from frees. Considering the number of players they are missing, survival is probably enough for the moment, but they will need to improve from here on, as they are vulnerable.

Stradbally

A very disappointing year from Stradbally, although somewhat unavoidable given the amount of injuries they suffered. They were solid at the back, with on of the best defensive records in the SFC, but it all went wrong for them in attack, where they averaged just 11ppg, which put them in the bottom three in the championship.

The Heath

There was a certain symmetry to The Heath’s season, as they scored and conceded a total of 48 points, giving them identical points per game averages in attack and defence. The same goes in scores for and against in terms of frees. Their problem is in attack, however, and they need to score more. Only managed 2 goals in their four games.

The Rock

A year to forget for The Rock. In almost every regard, they are at the wrong end of the scale. Scored an average of 9ppg, while just avoiding the tag of worst defence. There was an eight point difference between their average scores for and against, which was the highest in the championship. Very reliant on frees too.

Timahoe

Yet another relegation for Timahoe and the reason is simple - defence. They had the worst defensive record in the championship, conceding an average of 17.3ppg. Goals were a particular problem, as they saw six scored against them in their last two games. They did quite well in attack, but it’s at the back where the problems lie.
