The girls of Clonaghadoo NS made it a day to remember for the school when they secured the double over Killeen NS in the Allianz Division 5 final last Thursday.
In the last game played over the two days, Clonaghadoo had wind advantage in the first half and that, allied to an already talented team, meant they built up a strong lead at half time.
Killeen kept battling though, and they got some brilliant scores in the second half, but they just couldn’t reel in the Clonaghadoo girls.
The opening stages of the game were closely contested, as Leah Tarpey and Grainne Lalor fired over a couple of points for Clonaghadoo. Killeen hit right back though, as points from Saoirse Byrne and Lorna Byrne got them back on level terms. Clonaghadoo struck for their first goal moments later, however, as Shannon Daly was on hand to fire to the net, and Grainne Lalor quickly added two points to push them five ahead.
Saoirse Byrne pointed for Killeen, but Clonaghadoo were starting to get on a roll now, and Orlaith Whelan added their second goal before Aoife Daly rolled home their third. Indeed, they could have had a third only for Alex O’Meara to produce a stunning save for Killeen. Rebecca Byrne then got a goal back for Killeen, leaving the score 3-7 to 1-3 at half time.
A goal and point from Siobhan McEvoy for Clonaghadoo early in the second half left Killeen with a mountain to climb, but they never looked like throwing in the towel. They kept tagging on points, and even a Grainne Lalor goal for Clonaghadoo didn’t stop them.
Rebecca Byrne added three more points for Killeen, but it was to be Clonaghadoo’s day as they held on for the win.
