Portlaoise Educate Together NS made their own bit of history last Wednesday afternoon, as they claimed their first ever Cumann na mBunscol title in this Allianz Division 8 final.
As is so often the case, this was an example that goals win games, as the Educate Together school raised four green flags on the day, and that was the difference between the teams at the final whistle.
Sacred Heart had gotten off to a bright start, as Ella Byrne fired over a point in the second minute to give them the lead. The response from Educate Together was swift, and indeed clinical, as Sarah Guilfoyle cracked home a goal, and followed it up with a point less than a minute later.
With the wind at their backs, Educate Together were making it count, and Ciara Scanlon kept them on the front foot with their second goal in the eighth minute.
Educate Together were getting plenty of possession, but the strong wind was making shooting conditions difficult, as the struggled to extend their lead. Sacred Heart showed great battling qualities to get back into the game, as points from Sinead Murphy and Emma Reid meant they were still in the game at half time, 2-2 to 0-3 the score.
The start to the second half was going to be crucial, and it was Educate Together who were quickest out of the traps. Faith Augustine Victor (Umeh) showed her predatory instincts in front of goal, as she fired in two goals to put her side in control.
Sacred Heart weren’t going to lie down though, and they got a well-deserved goal from Eleanor Healy with six minutes to go. There would be no comeback, however, as Educate Together claimed the win by three goals.
