Park-Ratheniska’s hopes of provincial success were halted at the first hurdle on Sunday afternoon, as they were beaten by Wexford side Crossabeg-Ballymurn in Enniscorthy.
Hurling Leinster Club JHC Round 1
Park Ratheniska 1-5
The early stages of the game were evenly contested, as John Holohan pointed a free for Park-Ratheniska, and Niall Murphy replied for Crossabeg-Ballymurn when he fired a penalty over the bar.
Crossabeg-Ballymurn slowly started to get the upper hand, however, and points from Murphy, as well as an impressive score from Oisín Foley saw them open up a 0-3 to 0-1 lead midway through the half.
Murphy and Foley continued to cause problems for Park-Ratheniska, and another point apiece saw them push Crossabeg-Ballymurn into a commanding lead, and they stretched it further just before half time. Barry Murphy found himself through on goal, and he rounded Benny Dowling before firing to the net.
With Holohan adding a couple more frees for Park-Ratheniska, it left the Wexford side 1-7 to 0-3 ahead at the break.
Mark Campbell got the scoring for the second half under way with a nice point, and Park-Ratheniska managed their first point from play soon after through Denis Cahill, but there would be no let up from the home side.
Barry Murphy, having found the back of the net in the first half, repeated the trick in the second half, and that score all but ended the game as a contest, as Crossabeg-Ballymurn lead 2-9 to 0-4.
Brendan Fingleton pointed for Park-Ratheniska soon after, but there was no great comeback for the men in green and gold, with the Wexford side keeping the pressure up.
Points from Conor Devereaux, Des Kehoe and Barry Murphy kept them pulling away, but Park-Ratheniska were given some reward for their efforts when Mark Carroll managed to raise a green flag.
It made little differecne in the end though, as the home side claimed a 13 point win.
