Dublin 3-23

Laois 1-7

Laois crashed to one of their worst championship defeats on Saturday evening, as they suffered a humiliating loss to Dublin in the Leinster SHC quarter-final in Tullamore.

While Dublin came into the game as hot favourites, nobody could have anticipated that the gulf in standards would have been so evident, as they outplayed and outhurled Laois to an alarming degree, and by half time led by a whopping 19 points, and went on to lead by 27 before ending with a 22 point winning margin.

That this Laois side just crumbled on the evening would be an easy excuse to make, but the reality was that the slide by the county at senior level continued, and on this performance the present league position that sees them in the third tier is well and truly justified. Bridging the gap will take years of serious work.

Despite being only four points in arrears after 15 minutes, the writing was on the wall even then. Dublin went on to shoot 2-10 before the break, showing the huge gap that has developed between the counties in a few short years.

This was indeed humiliating stuff for the Laois team, and its die-hard supporters in Tullamore, as they were beaten from the time the ball was thrown in. But for the fact that Dublin emptied their bench from early in the second half and took their foot off the pedal, then a record total and beating could well have been on the cards.
