For the second year in succession Killeshin have made it through the Laois Ladies Junior Football Final following their impressive win over Park-Ratheniska in a tempestuous semi-final in Ratheniska on Sunday evening.
In a very competitive game some overly enthusiastic tackles necessitated referee Eddie Fitzpatrick dishing out a variety of cards to a number of players. Two players, one from each side, were given red cards in the second half while two Killeshin players were sin binned in the opening half.
The game never threatened to boil over but it is certainly very unusual for four players to be dismissed in a ladies football match.
Despite these distractions the match provided some excellent periods of football as both sides tried everything they knew to get the coveted final spot. The key to victory lay in the winners’ ability to snatch goals at crucial times of the game. Killeshin controlled the early stages and moved into a 2-4 to 0-0 lead after 13 minutes with full forward Eva Brennan the main instigator. It looked like game, set and match but Park-Ratheniska staged a spirited recovery and regained some ground by half time when the score stood at 3-4 to 0-3.
In the second half the hosts continued their fightback and added another six points but they were pulled back by two more well worked goals from Sara Dempsey and Sara Kelly. In the end Killeshin did enough to ease comfortably into the final where they’ll take on Sarsfields on Sunday August 26.

Sarsfields qualified to meet Killeshin in the Laois Ladies Junior Football Final on August 26 when they defeated Park-Ratheniska in the last round of the league series in Ratheniska on Tuesday.
Ratheniska had the best of the opening half and eased into a 1-4 to 0-4 lead after twenty five minutes but Sarsfields finished the half in blistering form and a goal from Becky Williams put them in pole position before the break. The second half was largely dominated by Sarsfields who piled on the scores, 3-9 in total, run out impressive winners.
