The meeting of traditional rivals Sarsfields and Shanahoe in the opening round of the 2013 Laois Ladies Football Senior championship was generally expected to be a reasonably close contest.

It didn’t pan out that way however and the game, which was played in The Rock GAA grounds on Tuesday, did not take the normal course as Sarsfields were very much in the driving seat throughout.

The hosts laid down a marker from the throw in and were 1-1 up after two minutes, the goal thanks to a clinical finish by Tracey Lawlor after a superb buildup involving five different players. Sarsfields continued to pound the Shanahoe defence and by half time the lead had stretched to 2-8 to 1-1 with Lauramarie Maher getting the other Sarsfields goal while Emer Guidera was on target for Shanahoe.

The second period brought very little relief for Shanahoe as Sarsfields, through Tracey Lawlor and Alison McEvoy, controlled the vital midfield area and the forwards duly capitalised on the subsequent supply. Behind them the Sarsfields defensive wall was expertly marshaled by Emma McEvoy, Siobhan Fitzpatrick and Mags McEvoy. In attack Lauramarie Maher, Meaghan Dunne, Rachel Williams Ciara Burke and Joyce Dunne all found the range.

In an overworked Shanahoe rearguard, where the absence of Marion O’Grady was sorely felt, Deirdre Moore, Hannah Bailey and Martha Kirwan tried hard to stem the tide. Behind them goalkeeper Eimear Barry pulled off some outstanding saves and was certainly instrumental in keeping the gap at manageable proportions.

As so often in the past Mary Kirwan worked tirelessly in the middle of the field and was ably assisted by Edel Siney. Up front the biggest attacking threat came from Noirin Kirwan, Emer Guidera and Lisa Dunne.
