A big crowd was in O’Moore Park last Wednesday evening for the U-12 C cup final between Ballylinan and Kilcavan.

Both sides were evidently excited to get the run out in the stadium, and this excitement transferred onto the pitch with a blistering pace being set from the off. Ballylinan struck first when Joey Walsh turned his marker and shot over the bar.

Kilcavan immediately responded with two points of their own from Declan White and Ronan Hyland. Kilcavan went on to open up a two point lead before Ballylinan goaled with a well taken effort from Riga Brady.

As the high pace continued Kilcavan again responded before we even had a chance to breathe with a goal of their own, from Ronan Hyland, who was looking to be in excellent form in front of goal. Another goal from Kilcavan gave them a cushion of five points coming up to the break. Ballylinan looked to be in some trouble and were going to need a brave effort early in the second half to claw back the deficit.

That brave effort was evidently going to be produced, as straight from the restart Jessie McEvoy pointed closing the gap to four. Two points from Cian Royal from Kilcavan saw him extend the lead to six, but a quick-fire two goals from Ballylinan’s Con Murray and Joey Walsh saw the sides back level, and euphoria spread through the stands.

Ballylinan continued to pile the pressure on the Kilcavan defence and this paid off with another goal for Con Murray. Just before the end there was an exchange of points but it was to be Ballylinan’s day as they ran out victors.
