Portarlington picked up two wins in quick succession in the ACFL Division 2, as they saw off Mountmellick and The Heath in a little over a week.
They defeated The Heath on Saturday evening with a powerful display, as they were simply too strong for the hosts second team, winning out on a 2-18 to 1-2 scoreline. They had things a little more difficult against Mountmellick, however, as they needed to come good in the second half to finally seal a seven point win, as life under Dermot Murphy gets off to a promising start.
Annanough bounced back from their trouncing at the hands of Park-Ratheniska last weekend to see off neighbours Courtwood by six points, 1-10 to 0-7. When these sides met earlier in the year it provided plenty of talking points, chief among them being Annanough springing two of their over fifties to make up a team, before then going on to win.
There wasn’t as much drama this time around, as Annanough held the upper hand for most of the game thanks to James Miller’s first half penalty, as they went in 1-8 to 0-4 ahead at the break. They never looked like being caught from there, and went on to claim a deserved win.
Killeshin’s impressive form continued at home on Saturday evening when they hammered Ballyfin 5-13 to 0-7, while Mountmellick bounced back from the loss to Portarlington with a 0-9 to 0-7 win over Portlaoise.
The Rock were also showing some impressive form as they were far too strong for Graiguecullen, easily winning out on a 4-11 to 0-6, while in the last of the games played over the weekend, Park-Ratheniska made it two wins in a row when they saw off the challenge of Clonaslee St Manman’s by 2-9 to 2-3 on Sunday evening.
