Handball stars shine at Kathleen Burke Cup

The finals of Kathleen Burke Cup were played in St. Brigids, Monavea last weekend. This is the biggest tournament in Laois handball and the quality of handball on display did not disappoint those in attendance.

In the Division C final Bernard Graham (St Brigid’s) defeated Michael Mulhall (St Brigid’s) in a thriller on a scoreline of 20-21, 21-20, 6-21. At one stage in the second game it looked as though Michael was on course to take the title but Bernard fought back and his superior fitness proved to be the decisive factor in him taking the title.

The Division B final pitted Wesley Neale (St Brigids) against Eddie Dunne (Cullohill). The first game was a competitive affair with Wesley taking it on a score-line of 21-12. In the second game Wesley proved too strong for Eddie with his array of kill and passing shots capturing him the title on a scoreline of 21-6.

The Division A final saw Andrew Dowling (St Brigid’s) come up against Peter Whelan (St Brigid’s). In the semi-final Andrew had accounted for Michael Donavan (Portlaoise) on a score-line of 21-13, 21-20 while Peter had beaten Brian Mahon (Clough) 21-17, 21-13.

Most people in attendance were expecting a close-encounter the first game proved an anti-climax with Andrew dominating throughout taking it 21-11. Peter tried to up-the-ante in the second game but Andrew showed the greater composure to take the game 21-13 and with his first ever Kathleen Burke Cup.
