Laois U-14 Ladies Football team picked up the county’s first provincial title of 2012 when they saw off neighbours Kildare in the Leinster ‘B’ Championship Final in Portarlington on Sunday.

Laois 2-12

Kildare 0-10

The game which was played in a very competitive spirit throughout by two well prepared teams was very much dominated by the elements. The Kildare outfit had first use of the strong wind but found themselves ahead by the minimum margin at the break, 0-10 to Laois’ 2-3.

Those two goals, scored by the ever alert Ciara Ward were to prove to be the decisive scores in the game as they kept Laois in touch despite the fact that Kildare notched up an impressive ten points in the opening half. The Laois points came from Lauren Kearney and Caoimhe Lalor.

The role of the Laois back division was also crucial in the destination of the Cup as they defended like demons and succeeded in keeping the Kildare goal tally to zero on the scoreboard. Centre back and captain Orla Carroll, who was awarded the Player of the Match accolade, was excellent throughout and was well supported by Maeve and Deirdre Phelan, Victoria Byrne and Lorna Butler.

The impressive tackling of the Laois defence continued in the second half to such an extent that the Lilywhites failed to add a single score to their half time total. At the other end centre forward Lauren Kearney was in blistering form and hit the target six times, with Niam Coss, Caoimhe Lalor and Marie Byrne completing the O’Moores tally.

This was a great display by the young Laois girls reflects very well the preparation put in by the management team of John Buggy, Seamus Lalor, Phil O’Keeffe and Aisling Kehoe. It also augers well for the future of the game in the County.

Laois now go forward to the All-Ireland B semi-final in July.
